New Professorship Human Development

[Translate to English:] Willkommen Mariëtte van Loon

On 1 July 2026, Prof. Dr. Mariëtte van Loon will take up the assistant professorship (with tenure track) in Human Development at the Faculty of Psychology.

Prof. van Loon researches the development of metacognitive skills in children and adolescents in relation to managing their own learning. Using experimental and longitudinal study designs, Prof. van Loon investigates how children and adolescents monitor their own learning progress, identify gaps in their knowledge and take corrective action. Social contexts such as the school setting and peers play an important role in this.

Prof. van Loon has been an SNSF Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich since 2023. Following her psychology degree at Utrecht University and her PhD at Maastricht University (2014), Prof. van Loon initially worked as a lecturer and Assistant Professor at Maastricht University (2013–2015). She later worked at the University of Bern (2015–2023) as a postdoctoral researcher and team leader for course and examination coordination in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience.

The Faculty of Psychology warmly welcomes Prof. van Loon to Basel!
