The Faculty of Psychology congratulates Prof. Dr. Mariëtte van Loon on her appointment as Assistant Professor with Tenure Track for Human Development as of July 1, 2026.
Prof. van Loon researches the development of metacognitive skills in children and adolescents in the context of self-regulated learning. Using experimental and longitudinal study designs, Prof. van Loon investigates how children and adolescents monitor their own learning progress, identify gaps in their knowledge and take corrective measures. Social contexts such as the school setting and peers play an important role in this process.
Prof. van Loon has been an SNF Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich since 2023. After studying psychology at Utrecht University and obtaining her doctorate at Maastricht University (2014), Prof. van Loon first worked as a lecturer and assistant professor at Maastricht University (2013-2015). She later worked at the University of Bern (2015-2023) as a postdoctoral researcher and team leader for study and examination coordination in the field of psychology and neuroscience.
The Faculty of Psychology warmly welcomes Prof. van Loon to Basel!
