How do children and adolescents learn to monitor, regulate, and optimise their own learning? 

At the Professorship of Human Development, led by Prof. Dr. Mariëtte van Loon at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Basel, we investigate the development of metacognitive abilities across childhood and adolescence. Using experimental and longitudinal studies, we examine how young people monitor their learning progress, identify gaps in their understanding, and make strategic decisions to improve learning. We also explore why these skills develop differently across individuals and social contexts.
