During the PhD program you will be supervised by at least two supervisors. One of these supervisors must be a member of Group I of the Faculty of Psychology. A member of Group I is a professor of the Faculty of Psychology who is authorized to supervise doctoral students.
The first supervisor is the primary academic mentor who is responsible for monitoring your progress and supporting your development during the PhD program.
If the first supervisor is a member of Group I of the Faculty of Psychology, written confirmation of their willingness to supervise you during the PhD program must be provided (informal letter).
If the first supervisor is not a member of Group I of the Faculty of Psychology (e.g., non-faculty members of Group I or II), two documents must be submitted:
- Written confirmation from the first supervisor that they are willing to supervise (informal letter inc. CV).
- Written confirmation from a member of Group I of the Faculty of Psychology that they are willing to act as second supervisor (informal letter).

There are two doctoral pathways at the Faculty of Psychology:
- The doctoral program. This option involves a structured pathway with activities and coursework to support PhD students throughout their research.
- Individual doctorates (single doctorate). This option does not involve a structured program, enabling PhD students to pursue their research independently of a specific program while still meeting the requirements set by the faculty (e.g., a specified number of credits).

Applicants who hold a Master's degree in psychology from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Basel are not subject to any additional requirements. For all other applicants, the Dean of Research reviews the content of the submitted Master's degree. If the degree is not fully equivalent (or only partially equivalent) to a Master's in psychology from the University of Basel, additional requirements may be imposed, such as earning specific ECTS credits or completing a colloquium in accordance with §12 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations.

In accordance with §7 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations, the doctoral agreement is drawn up during the first semester following the admission decision between the PhD student in consultation with the first supervisor. In the doctoral agreement, the process of the PhD program, the duration, the schedule, the project, and the courses to be attended are defined and confirmed with signatures.
The doctoral agreement is then submitted to the Office of the Dean of Studies. The Dean of Research checks the agreement and, after approval, the information is entered into the database. PhD students are informed of this in writing.

ECTS credits ensure that PhD students engage in structured learning and acquire additional skills relevant to their research and professional development. These credits reflect the time and effort dedicated to attending courses, workshops, or conferences that enhance both academic knowledge and practical expertise. Credit points are earned according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), whereby at the University of Basel one credit point corresponds to 30 hours of student learning.
For PhD students enrolled in the structured doctoral pathway, 18 ECTS credits are required to reflect the broader scope of structured activities that are integral to the doctoral program.
In contrast, for PhD students who are not part of a doctoral program,, 12 ECTS credits are required to ensure participation in essential academic and professional development activities, despite not being part of the structured pathway.
Reply
There are several channels through which ECTS credits can be earned. These include workshops offered by the Graduate School of Psychology (GRACE) and its doctoral programs (registration via the University's course directory), transferable skills courses offered by the University (registration via the Graduate School of Psychology [GRACE] transferable skills webpage), as well as content credits for active participation in conferences etc. (“Learning Contracts” are created for this purpose).

The doctoral agreement must be updated annually in the Office of the Dean of Studies. The progress of the PhD program must be recorded using the template “Status review meeting (including agreed objectives)”. The status review document is signed and submitted to the Office of the Dean of Studies independently by the PhD student and in consultation with the first supervisor.

The dissertation is an independent piece of research work and must demonstrate the doctoral student's ability to carry out independent academic work and meet the academic requirements of the subject.
As a rule, a cumulative dissertation is submitted to the Faculty of Psychology. This comprises:
- At least one peer-reviewed paper published or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal for which the doctoral candidate is the first author;
- At least two further papers submitted or accepted for publication or published in a peer-reviewed journal for which the doctoral candidate is the first author or co-author;
- A 10- to 20-page synopsis that integrates the research results into a coherent research question and research strategy and from which the doctoral candidate's own contribution is clearly evident.
Reply
Learning contracts can be used for PhD events, summer schools, paper presentations, attendance at conferences with own contribution, etc. The activities should be clarified and agreed in advance in consultation with the first supervisor. Holding a seminar as part of the course does not earn the student ECTS credits.

There are a number of reasons why one may have difficulties in interaction with supervisors. Overall, it is important to be aware of the University of Basel’s Code of Conduct, which emphasizes the values of integrity, respect, openness, equality, and inclusion in guiding communication between all members of our University (URL https://www.unibas.ch/en/University/Administration-Services/Vice-President-s-Office-for-People-and-Culture/Organisational-Culture/Personal-Integrity/Code-of-Conduct.html).
For formal or other issues related to the doctoral supervision process, your first point of contact should be the PhD Committee, which oversees all doctoral matters and agreements.
For matters concerning scientific integrity you can contact the Office of Scientific Integrity at the University. (https://www.unibas.ch/en/Research/Values-Ethics/Scientific-Integrity.html).
Finally, if your concerns involve personal integrity, you can reach out to the Office of Personal Integrity (https://www.unibas.ch/en/University/Administration-Services/Vice-President-s-Office-for-People-and-Culture/Organisational-Culture/Personal-Integrity.html).

Applications for ethical approval are submitted with the appropriate form via post (ek_psychologie@unibas.ch) and are typically returned within 30 days
