In the Department of Personality and Developmental Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Basel various research projects are conducted. The core aim of our research is to better understand and support human development from a holistic perspective. One of these projects is development of an instrument that better captures the cognitive abilities of children and adolescents with a migration background, the Intelligence and Development Scales - Migration (IDS-M). IDS-M is a language-free, culturally fair test of ability for unbiased assessment of the potential of children and adolescents with a migration background.

IDS-M is based on the Intelligence and Development Scales-2 (IDS-2). IDS-2 are the world's first comprehensive intelligence and developmental development test for children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 20.

IDS-M represents a language-free and culturally fair adaptation of the IDS-2 providing migration-fair cognitive abilities assessment. IDS-M is a completely non-verbal and computer-based test that can also be used for children and adolescents with non-existent or minimal German language skills. It measures problem-solving ability, eye-hand coordination and motivation.

With the help of the IDS-M, the assessment of the cognitive abilities of children and adolescents with a migration background is possible, so that recently migrated children and adolescents, can also receive a fair evaluation. IDS-M help to prevent children and adolescents from being classified as less intelligent only because of a lack of German skills.Children and young people can get a fair placement in the educational system as well as fair job opportunities. This is an important contribution to the integration in our society of children and youths, both with and without a migration background.
